The Emissary of Claudio/Torlonia

The municipal territory of Capistrello is a very magnificent place, where, in every season of the year, unsuspected treasures of historical records, naturalistic peculiarities and landscape beauties let us plunge into magical reveries.
But there is a place that, more than anything else, contains all of them.

In the canyon called Cupone,  we can immerse ourselves into history, going back through two thousand years, and into a naturalistic and peculiar background, so rich with vegetation and natural uniqueness.

And it is for that reason that Gli Amici dell’Emissario realised that, the lanes which lead to the place Cupone, had to be restored and reopened, if they wanted to let tourists visit Claudius’ Tunnel.

The acknowledgment received at the contest “I LUOGHI DEL CUORE” in 2016, allowed the making of a beautiful roundly lane, about 2 km long, which enables people to visit: the Roman site, the portrait of a Virgin Mary painted on a boulder, the cave called Concarelle and the ancient artifacts, along the banks of the river Liri.

The lane follows the stretch of the ancient road Sorana; then goes through some streets of the village, that is: Via Emissario, Via Traetto, Via Pisciacotta and a short tract of the adduction duct of an old mill.

The monumental arch of the Tunnel stands up in that  river area which is inside a very deep canyon, through which the river Liri flows.

It is also crossed by the ancient Via Sorana, the road that connected the Roman colonies of Alba Fucens and Sora.

An enormous vertical rock face, a boulder artificially squared, stands above the monumental arch of the Tunnel. It had probably been made to house a memorial, that was never carried out.
